Question
What is coordinated universal time and why is it abbreviated as 'UTC' ?
Answer
UTC is the name that has officially replaced the term GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) the international reference time upon which all the world's timezones are based. Many people still refer to it as GMT.

The abbreviation "UTC" is an internationalised compromise based on "Coordinated Universal Time" in English and the French equivalent - "Temps Universel Coordiné".

Just to ensure widespread confusion, UTC is also sometimes called Z Time, Zulu Time, Zero Time or simply Universal Time or UT. They all mean the same thing:- The official (mean solar) time of day along the Greenwich meridian.
Question
The Greenwich meridian runs through Greenwich in England - doesn't that mean that Great Britain/United Kingdom is on GMT?
Answer
It depends on the time of year. The United Kingdom does use GMT (UTC) in the winter months, however, each spring, on the last Sunday in March, along with the rest of Europe the UK's clocks are moved forward by one hour for daylight (saving) time (DST).

In Britain the daylight time is called BST or British Summer Time (a phrase which meterologically speaking has been a bit of an oxymoron in recent years). In autumn (fall), on the last Sunday in October, the UK's clocks go back to UTC.
Question
How do I lookup a city's time zone in CLOX?
Answer
Click 'zones' to open the ZONE Panel. Click the button marked 'tz info'. Enter at least the first four characters of the English name of a major city, country or state and then click 'find'. If information appears but it is about a different place, click 'find' again to look for other matching locations. If necessary, try an alternate spelling or a different city name. The database is updated regularly but you should also check the Clox Times for news of any recent changes to the timezone rules for your places of interest.

It is worth remembering that there exists no definitive source for 100% accurate global timezone information. Sometimes local governments switch timezones or daylight saving rules at short notice and with virtually no publicity outside their own country or region. Different web sites and software packages contain conflicting information. For this reason, for critical purposes it is a good idea to check with people on the ground and/or local governmental web sites to confirm clock settings. If you find an error in the time zone information in CLOX, please let us know so we can keep it all as accurate as humanly possible.
Question
I like the way that the Windows version of CLOX 8 can 'float on top' of other application windows but what if I don't want it to do that?
Answer

If CLOX is obscuring part of another application that you want to see but you don't want to close CLOX, you can re-size the CLOX window to make it smaller, roll it up, or just click the minimize button (L).
